HOTEL WITH A PAST
Glenwood Springs, CO… 1893 reflects a thrilling time in the history of the West and The Hotel Colorado’s grand opening was no exception. Prosperity abounded and no expense was spared in the creation of the elegant “Grand Dame”. Resembling a fine European spa, designed to cater to the wealthy, and provide a virtual playground for society’s elite, The Hotel Colorado quickly became a mecca to Presidents, silver barons, debutantes, and movie stars.

November 2 Isaac Cooper sells townsite of Glenwood Springs to Walter Devereux.

| 1892 |
January Walter Devereux secures $500,000 in foreign capital to construct the Hotel Colorado.
June 23 City of Glenwood Springs deeds the right to all of the hot mineral waters under the streets and alley of the town to Devereux’s Glenwood Hot Springs Co. This deed was required by the hotel’s investors to prohibit competing mineral water development and to insure profitability of the proposed Hotel Colorado.
June 25 Crews begin excavating the site of the Hotel Colorado

June 10 Hotel Colorado celebrates its grand opening
April–May President Theodore Roosevelt’s staff set up operations in the Hotel Colorado while the president hunts bear near New Castle. Roosevelt hosts a stag banquet at the hotel May 7, 1905 in honor of his hunting guides.
September 23 President William H. Taft visits Glenwood Springs and addresses an audience at the Hotel Colorado.
August 8 International Trust Co. forecloses on Hotel Colorado. Elmer E. Lucas is named the hotel’s manager.
December 12 The Hotel Colorado experiences foreclosure. Elmer E. Lucas buys controlling interest, becoming owner and manager.

October 23 The United States Government proposes taking the Hotel Colorado for use as an insane asylum. Protests by Glenwood Springs residents and intervention by Sen. Edward T. Taylor stop the plan.

July 8 Silver screen actor Tom Mix, his wife Victoria and 20 production crew members begin rooming at the Hotel Colorado during the filming of “The Great K & A Train Robbery”.

December 12 Owner Elmer E. Lucas dies. His wife, Katherine Lucas, becomes owner and manager.

Oil magnate Frank Kistler purchases the Hotel Colorado from Katherine Lucas.

August 2 Former President Herbert Hoover addresses Republican at a Hotel Colorado luncheon.

| 1942 |
Frank Kistler leases the Hotel Colorado, Hot Springs Pool and Vapor Caves to the United States Navy for use as a convalescent hospital. The Navy begins extensive remodeling of the hotel to create hospital facilities.

July 5 The Hotel Colorado is commissioned as the U.S. Naval Convalescent Hospital
July 11 The first patients are received at the U.S. Naval Convalescent Hospital. By Dec. 31, 1945, about 6,525 patients had been admitted to the hospital.

June 29 The U.S. Naval Convalescent Hospital is renamed U.S Naval Special Hospital.

U.S. Naval Special Hospital is decommissioned. The property ownership reverts back to Frank Kistler. Kistler then sells the Hotel Colorado to A.J. Crawford and Frank Hofues. The new owners undertake extensive remodeling of the hotel.

Philip Shalman purchased the Hotel Colorado and continues remodeling. The south courtyard fountain is removed and replaced with a swimming pool.

March 28 The Hotel Colorado is sold and renamed Ambassador Motor Hotel Colorado.

| 1966 |
Property sold at sheriff’s sale to Joseph W. Vittum, who renamed the hotel Glenwood’s Village Inn. The hotel is again remodeled to create “a city within a city” which included a photography studio, barber and beauty shops, retail shops, business offices, lounge, cafeteria and public meeting rooms. A u-shaped driveway in the south courtyard replaced the swimming pool installed in 1947.

Kirk Whitely purchases the Hotel Colorado. Restoration begins. |

May 26 Hotel Colorado placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Kansas Secured Funding purchases the hotel and begins a two-year renovation project.

| 1989 |
December Fidelity Bank of Wichita, Kan. Purchases hotel at sheriff’s sale.

| 1990 |
Property is transferred to Glenwood Properties. Remodeling, repairs and renovations done on interior of the building throughout the 1990’s

The Hotel Colorado has undergone numerous changes and renovations throughout history. Soon another facelift will transform the entire first floor of the hotel to replicate the original timeless graciousness it was created for. As history repeats itself, The Hotel Colorado changes with the times, yet it always remains the “Grand Dame”.
