As the autumn chill sets in, prepare to be enchanted by the spirits of the Old West in Glenwood Springs while enjoying a comfortable stay at legendary Hotel Colorado. 

Ghost Walks in Linwood Cemetery

The annual Ghost Walk, a fundraiser for the Glenwood Historical Society, is the pinnacle of Glenwood Springs’ Halloween festivities. This event brings back the spirited characters of yesteryear. Set against the backdrop of the town’s pioneer graveyard, Linwood Cemetery, Ghost Walk tours take you on an otherworldly journey back in time. As darkness descends, guides lead groups by lantern light to the hilltop cemetery, the resting place of Glenwood’s earliest residents. The path is rocky and steep so be sure to wear sturdy footwear and bring flashlights or purchase lanterns to light your way. Tours run on three consecutive weekends—Oct. 13-14, 20-21, 27-28—with tour times at 6:30, 7:15, 8:00 and 8:30 p.m. Families with young children are encouraged to attend the 6:30 p.m. tour for a slightly less scary experience. The cost is $25 per person ages 6 and older. Be sure to book your tickets for the Ghost Walk in advance, as they sell out quickly. 

Meet the Ghosts of Glenwood’s Past

Among the phantoms you might encounter during the Ghost Walk, a few notable spirits stand out. Doc Holliday, the famous gambler and gunslinger spent his final days in Glenwood Springs. Kid Curry, a notorious bank robber and Elmira Kier, known as the “Nine of Diamonds” in the town’s red light district are other characters who spring from the grave during this event. Convincingly portrayed by actors, the ghosts are eager to share the stories of their life and death with a captive audience. The Ghost Walk is an opportunity to connect with the town’s rich history and hear tales of the Wild West that have endured for generations.

Visit the Doc Holliday Museum

Continue your spooky adventures with a visit to the Doc Holliday Museum located on the basement level of Bullocks Western Wear store at the corner of Grand Ave. and Eighth Street. The museum, operated by the Glenwood Historical Society, houses an array of artifacts from the time in which Holliday lived. One of the highlights of the collection is an engraved pistol that some believe was a gift given to Doc by his girlfriend Big Nose Kate.
